The Fortress: Tips on how to play
This information may or may not be true, and also may change depending on how ben decides to go with this rpg (role playing game).
So far the approach ben took as GM (GameMaster) is to allow a lot of freedom on the players to rp (roleplay) their character so each can have their own unique story to tell.
Basically this rpg doesn't involve much of the GM's strings/control to dictate how your character progress in the game. So I suspect this is a story based rpg where players can write their character's own destiny with minimal GM intervention.
The things that I can see the GM's control in play are during NPC interaction, combat and looting sessions.
Players are encouraged to be a bit more proactive in writing their own rp instead of waiting for the GM to decide what their character should do. Write your own character's quest and objective, play as the survivor that you aspire to be, and take charge of things when opportunity arises.
The GM will let you know if what you're doing is unacceptable to the game via the OOC thread. Sometimes you may need to ask for the GM's permission to do something as well.
If your rp involves another player's interaction:
If you face a situation where you don't know what to do, or have nothing to do. Don't be idle, ask the GM for guidance, or arrange something with the other active player so you can keep rp-ing.
You can also strike out on your own and be a lone wolf for a while. Don't worry, you can always return back to the Fortress.
Being a good rp-er is to be a good story teller. Your true goal in any rpg to tell an epic tale for your audience.

If your rp involves another player's interaction:
- If it took too long for the other person to respond, ask the GM to rp that player so you can progress. I suggest you wait for that person at least 3 days.
- You are not obligated to follow the player around or wait for his/her orders. If you are getting impatient break away from the party and do your own thing. You can rejoin later, but write up a good story for it.

Re: The Fortress: Tips on how to play
Indeed, indeed you have most points right, this is a partially story-based RP.
The only times i'll usually step is during combat, looting, most npc interactions, and the occasional event inside the Fort.
I also handle levels, hidden skills, and perks.
